flor With their nuanced songwriting and inventive sensibilities, flor use their songs to explore feelings of longing and heartache, anxiety and self-doubt. On their debut album come out, you’re hiding, singer/guitarist Zach Grace, bassist Dylan Bauld, guitarist McKinley Kitts, and drummer Kyle Hill alternately magnify and brighten those feelings by dreaming up an intensely cinematic take on synth-driven alt-pop. But for all its transportive melodies and triumphant mood, come out, you’re hiding was born from a place of painful vulnerability. "Making this album has really been about me coming out my shell and getting over whatever block I have about letting people know what’s going on in my head," says Grace, who serves as chief lyricist for the L.A.-based, Oregon-bred band. "A lot of people probably struggle with believing in themselves that way, and the album’s a testament to overcoming that." Mostly recorded in Bauld’s bedroom studio, with its title nodding to Grace’s reclusive tendencies, come out, you’re hiding achieves its intimate feel thanks partly to a process that flor adopted soon after moving to L.A. "I’d started experimenting with different production styles, an… (read more)

ON THE AIR is a new series that presents works made by artists for broadcast television. This ongoing survey will showcase experiments undertaken by artists and visionary producers beginning in the late 1960s at public television stations like WGBH in Boston, KQED in San Francisco, and WNET in New York. Rather than a video art survey, or a series of films that feature television imagery or the manipulation of CRT monitors, this project will showcase work created by artists explicitly for over-the-air broadcast on television to a public audience. We’re thrilled to partner with Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI) for this very special variety show program, presented in conjunction with the exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, "Broadcasting: EAI at ICA," on view February 2-March 25, 2018. This program will unearth some of the best, most bizarre, and most entertaining works that artists have broadcast on television, from experiments with purchased airtime to unannounced broadcast interventions. Expect surprises, oddities, and the unclassifiable. The program will feature work by: Ernie Kovacs Lynn Hershman Leeson Chris Burden Stan Douglas Dara … (read more)

Iâve already written a list of the best gaming chairs available, but letâs be honestâthereâs only so much money in anyoneâs budget for a gaming throne. While thereâs certainly something to be said for ergonomic racing chairs made of the finest Italian leather, or a swanky Herman Miller chair that’s adjustable in 27 different ways, you shouldn’t have to sell family heirlooms just to afford a decent gaming chair. In fact, thereâs all kinds of excellent gaming chairs out there for about $100 or less, and thatâs what this handy list is all about. Spend the extra dough on what really matters: games, or hardware.

Picture a street in working-class Baltimore some 30 years ago. Kids play in the shadows of the row houses that line the sidewalks. Their parents sit on the stoops leading up to front doors. It all seems normal at first glance. But zoom in on one of these homes — that old duplex built back when this part of town was still mainly open fields. Inside is a completely different community, where fundamentalism, hippie values and volatile, unpredictable emotions coexist and collide. Escape is difficult: the only way out is to pass through the bedrooms of people you might be trying to get away from. This is where Eliot Bronson grew up. Yeah, he often wanted to slip away from there, but the first thing he saw once he exited was the Pentecostal Church across the street where his father and grandfather had preached and where congregants spoke in tongues.
OF YUNBOGI / YUNBOGI NO NIKKI (1965, 30 min, 16mm, b&w. In Japanese with English subtitles. Print courtesy of the Japan Foundation.) As many of his features from the 1960s would demonstrate, Oshima was concerned with the reverberating ills of Japanese imperialism in Korea. DIARY OF YUNBOGI is a focused yet lyrical nonfiction film that combines actual diary entries narrated by a 6-year-old boy with a montage of photographs taken by Oshima himself during a 1965 trip to South Korea. While the two countries had reached post-war diplomacy, the Korean peninsula was still crippled by poverty. Oshima’s camera takes to the slums and captures the faces of street urchins, rendering visible Taegu’s "50,000 orphans after the war," a condition echoed by Korea’s other inner cities. Oshima’s concerns with systematic modes of oppression, specifically in the Japan-Korea context would find resonance in later films such as SING A SONG OF SEX (1967) and DEATH BY HANGING (1968). Similarly, his remarkable sensitivity to the innocence of children as observed in YUNBOGI finds a fictional complement in BOY (1969). & KYOTO, MY MOTHER’S PLACE (1991, 50 min, digital) Commissioned for British television, … (read more)
